In this edition of the BètaBreak we will speak with Prof. Dr. Frans de Waal about his new book "Different: Gender Through the Eyes of a Primatologist". With the vast amount of discussions on gender in recent years, one would imagine that a new book on the topic would provide very few novel insights. Luckily, De Waal’s new book is filled with nothing but novel insights. Based on primatological research and his own experience in the field, De Waal paints a diverse picture of gender in the primate world. The book sheds light on how complex and varied gender can be across species, and is guaranteed to defy plenty of preconceived ideas about gender, sexuality and primate society.
